The task of going from dark to pastel colors is one that is shadowed in mystery and hidden agenda. We have tried to make things straight forward for you so taking the decision more informed.
Firstly it’s not a “quick” process nor is it cheap but we will tell you it can be stunning if done right! Going platinum is not a quick task and can take Months
Our co founder Merrylin wanted a pink egirl fade so we took the challenge. Her hair hadn’t been coloured for years so it was completely natural.
We only did two sections from the top of the ear to the corner of her bangs. It was lightened from roots to ends for approx 35 min, rinsed and dried then re applied leaving our roots for another 30 minutes. We then wanted to let the hair rest for a few days and the swelling on the cuticle layer to subside.
The condition was great so we toned it lightly adding a soft ash gold to take the raw look off it. The few days rest would ensure the hair is not going to be damaged.
But we want to have a pastel color so we need to remove all the warmth out of the hair, putting the pink over it begore the toner above would not have given us a clean color. Fading the pink to white would have been a fairy tale. So away we went after 3 days and re lightened it leaving out the roots for another 30 minutes. We rinsed blast dried it and applied the pink fade and here is the result.
The pink is intense and the roots and fades towards the ends and we think it looks hot! Maintenance is simply refreshing the pink every 10-12 washes and the blonde will grow out which will add to the effect and most likely we won’t do. Let’s see!
So you have saved up spent hours in the salon and you love the color only to find it wash out or the intensity has washed out after a week. We hear this often and typically one of the biggest causes is wrong shampoo!
Sulfate or SLS will strip the tone of the color faster than anything else, use a sulfate free shampoo!
Yes we stock it, in fact all our shampoo is SLS free.
The idea of going a pastel color probably has crossed your mind at least once or twice but the time and effort to get it let alone the cost to maintain it has most likely stopped you. Then there is the idea that it’s super visible and in your face right?
Well it doesn’t have to be, check out this peek a boo line pastel that will show itself only when your hair moves!
How can you lighten your hair ethically and keep the condition in check is a question most people struggle with the answer. The reality is if you are prepared to be patient then it’s possible but if you want to step out of work on a Friday night at 5 with black hair and walk back in Monday a soft beachy blonde then you are dillusional.
Now no matter what you have been told about additives that help maintain the integrity of the hair, there is still limitations you can not buy yourself out of. Hair is non descriminational nor does it care, the structure and it’s strength are the only thing that will get you blonde and keep the tone nothing else.
If you have been colouring it black since you saw your first grey hair and woke up and realised it looks fake ( about time ) then the transition from black to blonde will take you some time. By ” some time ” we are not meaning between 1-3pm on the Saturday after you wake up. It requires several sittings over several days or weeks depending on the way your hair reacts.
The reality is whatever has gone on your hair will effect the process and the result and no amount of wishing will change it. We get asked if heat can be added because some salons add heat to speed it up.
When you add heat like this, it may speed it up however it swells the hair shaft and causes more damage as well as a result effected by the swelling of the hair, which in the days after the color will change.
We suggest a in depth consultation about your desired goal and reality in result as well as timing . Once we have discussed possible results and we are all happy, then we proceed.

No matter what you do or who you talk to, there is a common thread that there is a certain level of expectations not being met. Now this ranges from salary, sex life, boyfriend/girlfriend goals to hair color and travel. Can’t really help you with the rest but want you to be aware of the following.
We have social media flooded with images of hair color, some real most photoshopped to the verge of unrealistic with most clients thinking it’s fairly easy, when in fact it’s a 12-16 hour color job but they want to be booked in be finished before lunchtime on a Saturday. We have hairdressers photoshopping colors to enhance them, clients using 3-5 filters to get that wow factor to enhance their feed.
We recently had a client with coloured black hair, wanting to have “just a few white highlights” then once we explained the process and the time involved almost looked like we were lying 🤥 it’s not a color you just slap on and that too on black hair.
Some people want instant and have very little concern for healthy of hair, Maintainence or anything as long as you can get s few good photo’s for your feed. Coloring hair is not as simple as choosing a box in our magical back room and putting it in a bowel, it is based on your hair history, condition, target color and the texture & strength of your hair.
Asking your friend what color they used and doing the same will never work it’s completely different from person to person as every single head of hair is not only different but has been through different things so it has to be treated separately.
If your thinking of a color change and looking for something that’s going to “Pop” come in and discuss it first to see if it’s realistic and what would it involve not only to do but to maintain. After years training we kind of know how to do color and what’s involved in achieving the best. We love talking hair and will always tell you fairly easily if your expectations are more like a Disney movie than reality.
Even once you have decided it’s on like donkey Kong, the decision then remains which shade to go for!
Once you have made the decision to do it, pastel that is! There are so many options you may end up putting it off just because the exact shade you can’t decide on. Best when you are up to that stage is to chill for a day or two, don’t think about it at all.
Call and make a booking then come with an empty mind, we will sit and discuss it with you then work it out together.
Can I do it? Will it look good? Where on my head should I do it? Is it expensive? How long does it take?
So many questions 😬
Well let’s take you they it!
Firstly it’s done on lighter hair, so if your hair is dark or coloured dark it needs to be lightened. Once a light blonde is achieved the rainbow colors are selected and applied. Is it that simple? Reality is nothing is that simple however if you are dealing with a light shade already then it could be. If you have had color and there is a regrowth then it gets more complicated ( not impossible just complicated ).
Will it look good? Well everything can look good if it’s done right.
Is it expensive? Easy answer is no, but the reality is depends on the state of your hair when we start.
How long does it take? Seems like we are avoiding a straight answer but this depends on length, existing color etc. Ball park figure depending on amount your doing etc but a small rainbow on collar length hair 40-60 dollars 💵
If you have been dreaming of it then the time is right. Give us a call
You think you stand out because well, you’re just awesome but the reality is no one can see it. Your color blends into the walls and at night you are invisible. The only time anyone can see awesome is your dance moves and by that stage of the night everyone is looking cool!
Well here are some birds 🐦 that take color very seriously 24/7 and know how to maintain it!
So let’s just say now you could step things up a bit no? Well if you’re ready then get on the phone and give us a call.
We got to put it out there, recently we saw a TV ad with possibly the worst wig known to mankind. Sure the model maybe didn’t agree to go bright pink or maybe production thought they could pick up a perfect wig at the corner store who knows.
Moral of the story is
Yes all colors are possible on your hair, if your hair condition allows.
No natural looking wigs rarely will be able to be fitted to everyone and certainly don’t allow for a last minute change holding on to MTV music video expectations.
Plan plan plan
Pastel colors can be done, they take time and effort to do and maintain.
If you want a bright color wig, get on line and check which one fits your budget and do your research.
You grew up thinking you had black hair, everyone told you it’s black, it looks black, chances are it’s not.
When your colouring your hair to appear natural going with the color you were when you were 5,10 or even 15 is wrong. As we get older our hair changes color so whilst you may have been dark brown at 10 your 35 with some white hairs chances are it’s brown!
If you’re colouring your hair to cover the grey here are a few things to help get the best out of the time and longevity of the process.
Always go 1/2 to 1 shade lighter than your natural color
Add variation, a few highlights gives variation and therefore breaks up regrowth, giving you longer between colors.
Don’t color the ends, ever! The ends should be lighter than the roots.
Use a sulfate free shampoo and always conditioner.
Try to add a variation each visit, shade change or add some fun to eliminate boredom.
If you can manage a few of the above, you’re chances of having a color people comment on in a good way are far greater!
You may have grown up eating meat and two veg type food ( boring and a little basic ) or in India Dhal & rice. That doesn’t mean that there are not more options out there, because there are endless possibilities.
Just like your wardrobe, although obviously any hairdresser will typically lean towards black, hair color options are far greater that a base color and a few highlights. It’s your blank canvas that expresses who you are and your personality.
You don’t have to be outrageous or OTT it just has to be an extension of your personality.
Why wait, give your hair salon a call and give your hair some color!
Admit it, you have at some point thought why not, why not have a little pastel color and yet you haven’t done it yet.
So many decisions, do you go washed out, full blown mermaid, rainbow 🌈 or a solid hello how you doing fully Lit version. Well we can’t answer that only you can but let’s look at the next step if you do it then decide to change it.
If you have natural color and no color in it then your options are almost endless, if you have been colouring your hair black for the past decade then your options are limited but you still have options. The best way to color hair is to ensure the integrity of the structure of the hair whilst achieving the desired color. If you leave it in the right state then changing each time is always going to be an achievable.
There is always some things that need to be done in the salon and some things you should be doing at home to make sure your hair is in its optimal condition.
Now if you have ever trolled through the internet in search of your next color like your hunting down your boyfriends ex, then you would have seen fake AF colors!
Now maybe you didn’t notice but maybe you did, it’s ok we can make it real but it’s a little more work than using the magic wand tool in photoshop.
Now whilst we have your attention about filters & photoshop let’s talk about those UGLY photo’s your altering to an inch of its life to make your skin look flat!
Sorry but you look stupid! Having flaws is where your beauty is at not a 2D image of emptiness.
Now adding warmth to a photo because your personality is cold AF doesn’t make you a better person, you look stupid unless your a cartoon character. Try to get the image neutral if it looks fake to you then you have played with it too much.
Trick is when you little you can get away with playing with it as much as you want, when we grow up you should be playing with it less!
So second time around veteran of color Awoka went steel grey and it’s looking awesome!
It’s become a color high in demand so we wanted to share a few things with you so you can make the right decision if this is for you or just a phase. Although nothing is permanent, it grows out and if you wait long enough you may just end up totally grey anyway right so what’s stopping you! What’s involved and can I do it myself at home?
That’s kind of like asking a chef give me the recipe I want to make this at home right?! Even if we gave you a step by step it’s hardly something that years of training would could match up too that’s why it’s always a better result to get it done professionally.
Firstly it needs to be lightened to the most pale white blonde and depending on the exact shade of the result toned to give the final result. Now blonde colors are endless, rose blonde, Sandy blonde, ash blonde, Snow White, ash blonde, dirty blonde and the lost could go on and on hence it is completely subjective.
If your thinking about going dramatic we suggest seeking professional advice, whilst it’s not cheap, to get even close to what your heart wants requires patience and skill, often several applications of color and change of plans depending on the results in real time.
How do you keep it this time?
Now here is the interesting part considering the water quality varies in every part of the world the tone can fade fairly fast so you need to take proper care. Use a sulfate free shampoo, always condition. A toning shampoo ( purple which counteracts the gold or yellow pigments ) can be used every second day to keep it perfect. Get the right advice and always get the hairstylist to show your there work before you take the plunge!
Products we use and recommend are Alfa Parf Milano!
It can take 3 applications of lightening powder, several toners and a lot of patience! ( bring your battery charger! ) You can not predict time, cost or result 100% as it depends on your hair however even if on the day you strike gold, we would suggest 24 hour gaps and re apply until desired result is achieved. Once your have shared your target color we do the rest until we get it!
No your hair won’t fall out
No it’s not going to make you bald
It’s permanent and will grow out, it won’t wash out. The tone may change over time however it will still be light
It’s not cheap, varies from head to head depending on texture, length etc
Can you add pastel once your that light? Yesssss
Drop in and have a chat about what your dream color is and let’s see what is possible.
I don’t know when the day your average consumer will wake up and realise the utter crap some people shove down your mouth like it’s French fries 🍟
The sad reality is most dumb people believe it, the stupid Ines doing it and the stupid ones buying into it. We see miracles that can make your hair silky in 10 minutes, the cheapest and the best this or that and yet no one wonders how? It’s called marketing if you were in 1980 but I guess thats another conversation, the cheaper faster best era where everyone claimed to be the best and the cheapest until the consumer got smarter and realised they wanted salons they could relate too and communication become more about reality than selling crap!
Bar code standard talk is almost scripted and funnily I know people who teach scrips, this is a personal industry and words have to evolve organically. The only way that can happen is by education and not teaching scripts or standard one size fits all hairdressing.
Words of wisdom, educate yourself and research salons not just browse a Facebook post it’s your hair. Personality sells
Anyone on social media will have seen hundreds if not thousands of pastel colors, some real some fake and possibly a few of you have thought about it ( maybe only for the sheer shock value ). Well before you pick up the phone and call your local salon here are a few facts to think about before you take the plunge in the deep.
1. You can’t create this look in 1 hour, 2 hours and most likely 3 unless your hair is already very light. It needs to be lightened. How much depends on the final result and how dark your hair is.
2. Once your hair is lightened the pastel color is applied, the more even the hair is in depth & tone the more even the pastel tone will be.
3. How long will it last? Well I would typically say 3-4 weeks if it’s looked after but depends on tone, depth etc etc.
4. You have to use a sulfate free shampoo ( detergent free ) to reduce fading and maintain intensity. You have to use conditioner every time you shampoo to make sure cuticle is closed.
5. Can you do it and color it back if you don’t like it? The easy answer is is yes however you need to be sure beforehand unless you have unbelievable condition hair and have loads of time and money or it’s just a waste.
Now there is a lot more to it and we suggest you see someone’s work before trusting anyone with this as it is easy to miss the goal and get average when with a little more effort and training it could have been incredible.
