How to evolve your look, one month into 2018

In life at times things get a little let’s just say blah, doesn’t matter if we are talking about work or relationships we have to make an effort to keep ourselves interested and interesting. With our hair we tend to get busy and forget to evolve our look from year to year let alone season to season and it takes effort and planning to do it.

Nothing like the first month of the year to get ourselves into a new chapter and change our look, it not only keeps you looking on point but keeps life interesting.

Bored af? Here are 5 things to do right now!

Your thrill for the day is seeing your own reflection in the mirror naked and then it’s off to work to wait till lunchtime. After that’s it’s a countdown to go home eat watch Tv then bed! Sounds like you?

It’s time to change things up a little! Haircut vs new wardrobe? Haircut is cheaper and can wear it everyday without people thinking your homeless so it’s the perfect choice we think! Get on Pinterest or Instagram and get some inspiration and book your appointment now before life sucks the life out of you!

Our style’s Menu dropped

You decided a change is what you want but not sure what, how, why etc well possibly the biggest mistake is choosing from a style book!

It’s not like going to a Korean restaurant and choosing fro. The photos because nothing is in English ( although we all do that based on if we want to eat that’s the only way it’s going to happen ). Hair texture, density, movement and face shape is always I repeat always different from person to person.

A proper consultation, an in depth discussion about your hair, the history, what you love, what you hate, what your styling expectations are, what you want it to say and the list goes on!

Creating beautiful hair that you love is a collaboration between you and the hairstylist and rarely happens by choosing style 69.

If your salon visit starts with hello Madam trim? Then it’s time to experience a salon not a saloon.

You get color all over your face?

As the saying goes, work in shit, fall in shit and it’s never more true than getting a color done. I guess applying color to someone’s head is easier than going duck shooting but some hairdressers still think they are being artistic by creating a horizontal canvas across your head, face, floor, chair and at times the walls. Clean sections and attention to details is the best way to color hair, in fact if they have to get color remover out and scrub your face to remove it you should be re thinking your choice in salons.

Often people will ask put more color on, as if by putting double it may last longer. Sadly this is not true, in some situations it creates more heat and alters the color process.  Color on ends is not something you should be doing often at all in fact unless there is a major problem color on ends should be slightly lighter than the roots so by doing it the only thing your doing is drying out the ends and creating a problem with the condition.

How not to look like a tiger

Imagine you want to have the color  with the supple variation of a house cat but you walk out looking like a tiger?!

Whilst brand is important for condition and reaching desired color, it is the person applying the color that has to know the right techniques in order for it to look right. Heads of hair are never the same and whilst we all see cookie cutter style advertising on get this get that for xyz, the reality is it’s not about price, product or location it’s about having the right skill set to be able to achieve it!

Whilst tigers are endangered, the stripped look may have been in for the 80’s and certainly a eye catcher for a fashion show but on your hair daily, it’s really not that cool.

Hot boys 4 rent

Could be your as lazy AF, too busy building your empire too your the coolest kid on the block. Whatever it is the answer is yes, we can come to you, don’t panic don’t clean the house we have seen half naked celebrities and blow dried hair whilst people sit on the toilet it’s all good.

Depending on your exact requirement the cost, starting at $1,500 plus travel cost we fly anywhere to do almost anything. More info email us [email protected] with your exact requirement and we will take care of everything and not leave a trace that we have even been there other than sexy bang on hair!

Everything you do is WRONG

Ever been in a situation that it feels like nothing you do is enough, everything is NQR and your falling short of delivering basic? I think we have all been there, you have to drag yourself out of it, the person critiquing needs to cease on the ” this is not right” mumbo jumbo and you need to kind of let it slide over your head and not take it personally otherwise you will end up simply not trying anymore and getting depressed.

Just had a heart to heart with two of our lovely clients who said before coming to us they always had anxiety before visiting a salon due to the stylist’s criticism about there hair, the cut, the color etc.

A professional stylist should never do anything but make you feel comfortable rather than making you feel self conscious of your hair, your look or the decision of who cut your hair last. Visiting a salon is firstly about the work and about making you feel like the best version of you possible.

If your salon is not making you feel good then maybe it’s time for a change!

A face only your mother could love?

So you have a face for radio, one that only a mother could like?

You wake up every morning and don’t like looking in the mirror? It’s time for this shit to change and it’s time for you to start loving your reflection!

How?

Well firstly let’s all agree that what goes on in your head decides what happens outside in reality so it’s super important that you get this attitude in control now. You change outside it impacts the inside, so it’s time to get yourself feeling good because life is short! Your reflection is perfection. Be happy, get up and get yourself into a salon and get something done to make yourself feeling awesome.

Don’t let Valentine’s Day explode on your face

Doesn’t matter what you think about that day, considering it’s an American thing and not really part of any other culture I guess it’s ok to ignore it or is it?

Hell no guys!

It’s not ok to make no effort! I’m all for equality but there are some things that us guys should be doing for the woman in our life no matter what they say!

Opening doors to buying flowers regardless of Valentine’s Day or not but considering it’s only a day away let’s start with that day, may be cliche but well who cares.

Time for you guys to get your A game on!

Hair magicians

You have got the perfect reference, taken a booking and got your hair done only to see it looks nothing like the photo you showed the hairstylist the next day and you have no idea why or how to change it!

It’s super important we all get on the same page, hairdressers are not magicians but a good hairstylist will teach you how to recreate the look that you leave the salon with so everyday you love the look. Obviously the cut is the foundation to it all, if that’s not right then no amount of product or blow drying will fix it so the cut is super important.

What products?

Very rarely will your bathroom consist of the endless supply that a salon has so it’s important you speak to your stylist on which ones you have to have and which ones would be good to have, it may mean getting one this visit and the rest next time. You should know how to use it, how much to use of it.

Before leaving the salon a good stylist will explain the how, when, why, why not, the how hot & how cold to which direction to blow the hair as well as styling options.

Good luck & see you soon!

Lakme fashion week Summer Resort 2017

We all wait with baited breath every time there is a fashion week to see which way fashion is moving, what’s going to be the new thing and what will inspire us not only in the industry but in life. Attended Lakme fashion week this season and we saw some definite trends dominating the ramp with hair

  1. The selfie
  2. Braids, lots and lots of braids
  3. Messy hair
  4. Afro’s, yes afro’s! Loved it
  5. Shorter hair! Yes short hair and great to see some diversity in hair lengths

The runway around the world we see hair very differently, it’s about creating a feeling, an attitude vs creating uniformity. As an Industry we all have to work towards bringing out the best in each look whilst maintaining the overall vibe. That being said it has been great week in Mumbai, a few exciting things happening which we will share soon!

We feel diversity is the only way to grow, doesn’t matter if we are referring to immigration ( with what’s happening in USA ), culture, weight, size and attitudes is when there is a melting pot of the best of everything. Embrace everyone’s uniqueness and in fact encourage diversity that’s what enriches the world as well as tolerance levels.

See all the looks Here thank you Lakme & Img for having me

Should I spit or swallow?

If your like most people every now and then you get dished up something and put it in your mouth, slowly roll it around thinking I really don’t want this but it almost feels too late to just spit it out! It could have been at a relatives house for dinner or after a night swiping right on tinder.

Getting your hair done should never leave a bad taste in your mouth, or leaving the salon thinking wtf did I do in my life to deserve this. The best advice we have is simply spit it out, if your asking the question then it’s kind of obvious you should spit right?

Don’t be lame and choose awesome, choose to take all the hair goodness we have to offer.

Change is as good as a holiday

What crap! Give me a week on the beach any day I say, but I do know that feeling when life has become a little boring, your routine has become more like a checklist rather than a life. Well maybe it’s time to spice things up?

Yes there are a lot of things that can heat things up, but we are talking hair you flithy little animals

If you have been putting a change on hold then January is the perfect time to jump and make the changes you want to see in your life! Log out of Tinder, turn off netflix and get your butt off the couch and get the change you deserve for this year in 2017!

What are you waiting for?

She bangs

Looking for the easiest way to change your look then maybe it’s time you got banged up 😜. Here are some various options of bangs to make things a little easier to choose because by now you know any bang is not always a good bang ( pun intended )

Bangs are always in, depending on what suits you both fave shape as well as personality maybe it’s the change you need!

Bang away and remember to practice safe banging.

Color decoded

We all say words, that to us have a definite meaning based on our life and our experience. Your feelings or thoughts on those words and others is not correct or incorrect it’s simply different. Let us explain a few examples to make sure we are all on the same page because it’s super important that your hair stylist & you have a complete conversation around the words you use when we talk color. Someone who’s hair that is above the collar will have a certain picture in their mind what is short and if your hair is halfway down your back chances are your version of  short will not be the same.

Let’s look at some variations of gold or copper

Now let’s look at some variations of red’s

So you can see when you are describing color there is many factors to consider, be it your filter of the word itself to the experience you & the stylist have had. Using images as a reference is the best way to explain your version making sure to have references of what you don’t like.

Defining your idea of the color will help the hairstylist and you be able to achieve your goal.

Secrets you need to share with your hairdresser!

Most people know that the secrets held in a good salon are at times scandalous but hold the answers to the how & why when it comes to getting the hair you have always wanted.

Your hairstylist needs to know what’s going on in your head so they can bring it to life on the outside!

Sadly a lot of salons still don’t get it and spend more time with decorating price lists and creating “deals” when they should be just talking and asking the right questions after all this is a people’s business.

There is sometimes demons in our minds when it comes to going to your appointment, maybe it’s based on previous experience or maybe it’s just from never really loving your hair. Either way let’s help by giving you the heads up on what you can take with you for your next appointment.

  1. Do your homework, no your not back at school but even while your sitting on the toilet go through Pinterest until you have a few references. Length, color, shape and also what you don’t want!
  2. Be honest, if there is one person you shouldn’t try to Bullshit it’s your hairdresser! Your diet, your fears, your dreams and what you ultimately want your look to be.
  3. Don’t wash or blow dry your hair before you visit, we need to see reality & how your hair sits. Expect a indepth consultation PRIOR to heading to the basin.
  4. Honesty on how long your prepared to spend on it daily, what products you use and if you want to be blow drying or just wash n go!
  5. Don’t make drastic decisions based on recent heart ache or life events you may just regret it!
  6. If you have had a bad experience then share it, what happened and what went wrong so it doesn’t happen again.

So basically if you don’t have a relationship with your hairdresser that includes the good bad and ugly then you need to change hairdressers because your missing out!

If you want the hair you have always wanted, then start with not thinking your salon is a drive thru Mc Donalds that you can order from!

You got your what pierced?

No secret that you can get almost everything pierced and yes I mean everything! Doesn’t really matter if you like it or not because guess what, it’s gangster level 10. Well the latest obsession is braided Peircing which takes your cute cornrows up a level in anyone’s eyes!

So before you think you have to drop your pants or take your top off to show everyone you are a star studded gangster check these out!

Itchy beard?

Any bloke with a beard will tell you that at times it gets itch as hell, you just want to scratch it till your face falls off. Obviously doing this in public sends off jungle man vibes ( and not in a Tarzan good way ) so it’s best to follow a few rules to keep the skin and face healthy to avoid this.

  • Wash your beard daily, you can use the same shampoo as you do for your hair, beat to use a Sulfate & Parabin free products they are gentle. If you have a longer beard wash it after eating to make sure there is no food left it it 🙊
  • Condition only the ends of your beard, do not apply the conditioner on your face. Comb it with the conditioner in
  • Moisturise your skin under your beard.
  • Do not! Apply oils on your face.

Sadly a lot of guys tend to neglect your skin and when you have a beard the general thought is its low maintanence, which is true however there are things you need to do so it is easier but also looks groomed.

Trimming your beard should be done every 2-3 weeks to keep it in shape, whilst it grows at the same speed as the rest of your hair, it can get out of shape faster.

Disconnected men’s haircuts uncovered

There is a growing trend of having disconnected lengths through the interior to create a shape & style. Gone is the old school undercut and welcome in the evolved versions of the disconnected cuts!

“Sometimes it’s done due to hair texture, sometimes it’s to create shape and ease of styling” says our creative director Rod Anker

First seen during war times out of ease to be done by anyone not just trained professionals disconnected cuts were done out of need and typically worn slicked back with grease.
The undercut has gained a lot of momentum especially in the last 12 months and we feel the need now to help you explore a few more options to help you evolve your hair.

This keeps weight and length on the top whilst removing the exterior and going very short leaving an area that is not connected in length. Styling is simply with a little matte paste to create texture!

Well you work in a let’s just say not so youthful office that spends more time worrying about your clock in time and thinks “cool” haircuts and fashion like a weird language they don’t know. This keeps the length at the front so on the weekends you can change it up and show off your personality.

Much the same as the previous but a little longer at the front, be aware the longer it is the harder for it to stay back ( it’s called gravity 🙂 )

Just because you like it short doesn’t mean it has to be boring! Shaving it super tight on the sides and leaving it slightly longer on purpose adds attitude!

Your head tattoo is too cool to cover cut!

I want to look like a gangster out of GQ magazine undercut

I only want people to notice how cool my cut is from behind haircut!

So get yourself into the salon and get your hair game on point.

5 hair cuts that are not your typical Mom cut’s

There are several ways your mind works when you book in for an appointment, it’s maintanence or complete boredom ( sometimes with hair, others with life ) either way getting a radical change whilst it’s sounds daring and fun can at times be a decision that literally has to grow out!

Here we have 5 variations of “the bob” that if done right will make you look like a MILF rather than a soccer Mum!

Now sure they are not pastel blue or mermaid-esk like but when styling they lend themselves to the less is best in terms of look and feel.

These styles best friend products are

  • Sea salt spray
  • Curl control creme
  • Linseed serum
  • Smooth blow out creme

Make sure you get a little tutorial from your hair stylist so you can re create the look yourself or you may end up going back to putting it up in a bun!

If this happens at your salon visit, get up and run!

A salon visit for some can create high anxiety especially if you haven’t been there before or if you have had a not so pleasant experience sitting in a chair. Obviously we need to point out here that prior research on experience is your best bet, however if you have curly hair then you will be more anxious for sure as it needs a little more TLC to make sure the curl sits right.

Not everyone has a good understanding of hair movement when it has curl ( in fact a lot of salons pride themselves still in making it straight ) so you need to find the right person and have an in depth discussion on your expectations and find out if your living in a fairytale or if it’s in fact a possibility.

3 Red Flags that should send you running out of salon

  1. They tell you to do keratin or rebonding If this is the first option then run. We should be looking for options that embrace your natural movement and curl not just by changing the texture using chemicals.
  2. They want to cut it wet! Hair wet and dry has a completely different texture and finish, it behaves differently so therefore needs to be cut in its natural state ( dry )
  3. They want to use hairspray Curly hair especially should not have products which have alcohol in them you should be using creme’s, serum’s and moisturiser. It’s about boosting up the moisture levels.

Remember curly hair revolves around the moisture levels in it, the more moisture in the air the better the curl, hence most people with curly hair love living close to the ocean.

So when your doing your research for your hair make sure to sit and discuss your hair with your potential stylist prior to getting them to cut it.

How to talk hair like a boss!

For a lot of people they know what they want but can’t explain it, we decided to make things easier and give you the lowdown on the basic hairdresser coloring terms to help you describe the images in your mind. There will always be a different version of most things when it comes to describing something that you can’t physically see. Color charts ( or shade cards ) are possibly the worst guide to color ever as it’s not hair so it’s an instant misconception on result, shine, tone etc.

We always spend more time to make sure the depth, tone, reflect and undertone of any color is discussed firstly so everyone has a clearer picture of the end result.

Let’s look at some terms used in a salon and break them down

Global color or base color

This is a color applied to your entire head of hair, can be done by itself or st the same time as highlights or foils.

Warm &  cool tones

Warm colors refer to red, gold &a copper whilst cool tones are violet ash and flat blondes or browns.

Brassy

Sadly we all have the friend who thinks she is blonde but it’s more like Garfield orange. That’s brassy.

Ombré

Now whilst Donald Trump recently referred this technique to some bad gangsters in the USA ( Donald Trump speech ) it is in fact the blending of one color on the roots to a soft transition to another color on the ends without a visable line.

Dip dyed

Just like the name suggests it’s like getting your hair and dipping it in a bucket of color.  It’s bold.

Ballayage

This is a freehand technique the hair artist uses to create a very natural shift of color throughout the head, it’s random, it can be done with multiple colors and it’s low Maintainence. Beware it should be done by a very trained colorist.

Part line highlights

As the name suggests it’s highlights just on the Partline, can also be called crown lights, tiara highlights, halo highlights and few more but you get the gyst. Can be done by itself or in between when your full head of highlights need doing when the bank balance only allows part payment.

Hair Spa vs Hair Treatment

Well most people think of a certain brand when they think of the term “hair spa” let’s make things basic.  Hair spa is basically conditioner or a mask like product, a nice massage and maybe some steam. A treatment is a product that repairs on a cellular level, typically isn’t about massage but can include however is irrelevant to the end result.

Toner

This is quite simply the adjustment of the tone of your color, used when going lighter to reduce or deposit certain tones. If your hair is brassy then ( depending on how bad it is! ) this could be the right thing for you.

Now here are a few really common things we get asked or told ( no seriously we do )

I don’t need a full cut just a quick trim, is it cheaper?

I don’t want a lot cut off just the ends!

The color you did 4 weeks ago has grown out! Was it permanent ( as she points out the line which new hair color is showing )

I just had it trimmed 3 months ago it doesn’t need cutting. ( should be every 6 weeks )

Dont leave the color on too long or it will be too dark. ( color is chosen and mixed and timing has zero link to depth of color )

Don’t use conditioner it makes my hair fall out. ( we still hear this in the salon all the time. Conditioner makes your hair smooth hence the loose hair in your mane will slide out regardlessly )

So it’s best to have the right picture references possibly 2-3 together with your correct verbiage.

Consultations are always free so drop into any professional salon and get an idea of what they can do.

Have you morphed into a Viking?

It’s perfectly normal to get carried away with a good thing but we need to know when enough is enough. It may be coming into winter or you have just completely forgotten to stop and look in the mirror as part of your morning routine but your beard may becoming a state of its own!

The important fact on beard Maintainence is the shape has to work with your face shape and can very easily add 10-15 kg’s to your look so be careful. Sure if your frowning it for a early 18th century warrior movie, or have just purchased that Harley Davidson then completely ignore this now, you look great!

If you or someone you know is sending  Viking vibes a little too much please seek professional help.

Your hair is making you look like Knob!

Gone are the days when your talk about your hair is 12-15 days I get it cut, sounds more like the routine of rotating your indoor plants rather than a hair plan!

Often we hear the same thing from  guys, ” I want it short, should look different but can’t look different Monday to Saturday because I’m in a office”.  Sound familiar?  We can’t look and act like everyone and expect to be noticed no matter how good at what we do, we all need to keep everyone excited about our look and personality.

No you don’t have to shave your head to resemble a knob, but I guess if you did it sure would turn heads!

So no matter what your searching for, be it the perfect job, that promotion or your idea of the perfect girl before you think your the catch of the century with your splashing of 90’s labels your highly tucked pants with your branded belts make sure your hair isn’t so off track it’s cross country!

Healthy choices for your hair

With a large shift globally of us all choosing more natural food, less processed and more organic and ethically produced produce it only makes sense at some point we question our hair choices. So many myths, blogs, advice and DIY information out there that almost always contradicts itself.

Here is my tips for things you can stop, start or continue depending on what your currently doing.

1. Shampoo choice – depending on the state of your hair, if you have color, damage, fine, thick etc etc but a sulfate free shampoo or one that is low in sulfate like “organic” by Label M is ideal. Will cleanse gently but not strip color or moisture. Once a week using a deep cleansing shampoo to remove any pollution or impurities is a must also. Keeping in mind when you shampoo you must condition every time ( just your hair ) shampoo daily or very least alternate days.

2. Rebonding is in my opinion one of the most aggressive things you can do to your hair and creates a nightmare long term for both styling as well as Maintainence. Alternative is Keratin ( fermaldehyde free) we use Global Keratin.

3. Regular trims, yes 6-8 weeks and if the thought scares you is probly to do with the scissor happy hairdresser you go to so change. Removing and split ends is essential for healthy looking & behaving hair.

4. The most over used word in Asia is HAIR SPA peeps understand majority are beautifully packaged conditioners. You need protein and moisture and treatment will do that so repairing damage is part of the purpose and a lot simply can’t do that. We use ALFA Parf linseed treatment and Olaplex.

5. Styling, a lot of hairstylist burn, pull when styling your hair and this if done weekly will create damage that only scissors can remove. A blow dry should never really be felt let alone be painful.

If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you already have. Hair you love starts with a few choices by you.

Face shape matters

I see so many blogs, articles etc on face shape and honestly most same more or less the same thing sure some are better but for the most part apparently we have all read it.

The sad reality is most people think it doesn’t apply to them, or their face. So to put things into perspective let me explain it, if you have a face ( even tho most weekends you get off your face, that’s a completely different discussion ) then you need to make sure your hair is not making it harder, fatter, thinner, wider or longer.

Sure it’s a hard task to find the best salon or hairdresser when everyone is claiming to be the best but you have to do your research. Too many times I see people with very hard features that make them look harsh, angry or masculine when a few small tweeks could completely change not only the look but how others treat you!

Get on line find the best person to speak too or Talk to your hairstylist.

We don’t want your blood, we want your heart & soul

Anyone who is successful at anything will always be asked by others to teach them how and show them something they can do to be the same. Yeah sure there is some techniques, experience, personality etc etc and the list goes on but the one thing that makes it all happen is….

Passion! Without heart and soul nothing will have the fuel to survive. The funny thing that I have to mention which is not as easy to grasp as a leader, boss educator is that with passion comes opinion, you should not try and put out that fire in anyone’s  belly. By trying to dominate others opinion you are dulling their passion for what they are doing and in effect what you have them on your team for! Too often I’ve seen so called bosses tell people not to think just do as they are told, then wonder why their business is average.

Encourage diversity in the team, full hearts and minds with hunger for more. Having one of the best teams in the country I can honestly say we don’t always agree, but I’m incredibly happy with that because that’s who we are as a brand.

Want to be part of the @rodankersalons team then shoot us a message or drop an email to [email protected]

Fast food & made to order Hair

Your hungry and don’t really care about what your eating because your about 35 seconds from eating your arm then you pick up the phone and order the fastest thing. It’s ok we have all done it, certainly not the best thing for you  if your planning on it being a daily activity but once in a blue moon is fine I say!

Now when it comes to your hair a lot of you ( yes a lot! ) choose your hair salon based on the best deal, coupon or promotion. Now whilst I know and it’s true for all of us that there is a budget for us all for most things. We need to understand the difference and the actual cost of a bad or under researched decision.

1. A good haircut should last your 6-8 weeks, should sit in shape and be manageable for most of this time.

2. A lot of people I talk to say they get a color every 2-3 weeks and hate being tied to the salon. I would say 5 weeks is ideal anything before that your color is either A. High fashion color B. Wrong choice of color.

Either way your spending too much and wasting too much time, re asses the look vs time you are happy to spend in the salon.

3. This is the most sensitive one which very few will admit. Most salons have a treatment or several treatments ( or maybe you understand if I say ” hairspa” ) that do very little to improving hair condition but are a great money earner. Yes it’s true a LOT are just as basic as a conditioner! A waste of time and money.

4. You will be told to go for this or that, your hair needs it etc etc and whilst sometimes it’s true a lot of the time it’s not. Some salons will try to convince you to do services that lock you into visiting more regularly just to squeeze a little out of you more often which means your spend is higher.

Now don’t get me wrong I’m not throwing stones I’m simply trying to explain that buying anything on price isn’t always cheaper. Besides all of the above there is obvious other factors to take into account.

Next time your out shopping on price maybe Google quality then drop into the salons shortlisted and have an honest conversation about what you can afford and what look your after.
