Bad Eating habits could be causing your hair loss!

To have healthy hair you need to do a few things and none of which you can swap or change. It’s not a bargaining thing it’s facts, you can not have a good diet and only sleep 3-4 hours a day and expect to be full of energy. Just like you can not skip gym 6 days a week and have a killer body, sadly it just doesn’t work like that. Healthy hair is a combination of what you do internally and how you treat your hair once it’s outside your body.

Hair once visible is not living matter so it’s incredibly susceptible to damage and must be treated with respect in order for it to be in best possible condition.

We all want what we want, some want every chemical treatment available and yet wonder why it’s not silky smooth and healthy, well sometimes you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Healthy hair starts with you and your diet, a balanced diet that ensures your body is getting all the nutrients and fuel to be able to function and grow the best hair.

Can you increase hair growth? Reality is no, sure some will say you can because we all want to hear it but truth is you can not. Hair grows marginally faster in summer vs winter that is a fact.

If I’m growing it why should I trim it every 6 weeks?

May be obvious but in case you slept through that class, hair is dead, if you don’t remove the ends every 6-8 weeks then you will get split ends which will travel up your hair shaft and break off. Hence your hair will appear like it’s not growing or at times getting shorter.  If it grows on average 1.5 inches per month you can trim 1/2 inch every 6 weeks it’s still getting longer right?!

Can I rub fruit, oil or anything on it to make it grow faster?

Um no, if you have any idea how skin works, it’s not soil and your not growing tomatoes 🍅 compost on your scalp will only give you a bacteria infection and do absolutely nothing to your hair growth!

Can vitamin supplements help?

In some respect yes, if for whatever reason you can not cover the five food groups then you can add a Su plumber to assist however again this is a last resort and not going to grow your hair faster or thicker.

The best advice is everything in moderation, make sure you have a hairstylist that will say no to you in the interest of healthy hair, don’t do something for the sake of it and always use good products.

So best thing to do is start with a good well balanced diet, good healthy lifestyle and a good night sleep!

Why home remedies don’t work!

Now before you start getting defensive and tell us all the wonderful stories your mum told you just relax. This is about facts, we don’t know your mum and am sure she is wonderful. BUT

Hair once outside your scalp is dead, the living part of hair is beneath your skin, it grows here under several layers of tissue and the base. Within the follicle stem cells divide rapidly, as new cells are formed the old ones are pushed up and form the hair shaft, the part that you eventually see. As hairs become part of the shaft, they undergo a process called keratinization, in which they become filled with keratin. So, technically, instead of being made up of pure keratin, hair is made up of dead cells that are filled with and surrounded by keratin.

So putting anything on your scalp to encourage growth is almost pointless because the work is done internally so it all comes back to your DNA and Diet. Sure a massage on your scalp may increase the blood flow to your root marginally but not enough to make a difference.

So if your onion pulp or egg won’t penetrate the skin, how is it meant to feed the root of the hair, the only part that is living? How is oil going to do anything?

Maintaining healthy hair outside the skin, it’s important to understand the following. Hair is dead and we have to keep it in the best condition as long as we can. Regular trims to remove damage from chemicals or environment, regular cleansing and not coating the hair strand unnecessarily, like oils or silicone.

Excess oil on the scalp will create a PH issue for the tissue we call scalp therefore could encourage hair fall. Oil on the hair strand doesn’t do anything other than coat the strand and can in fact dehydrate the hair by increasing the temperature of the strand.

Healthy hair is about diet, lifestyle and your DNA. Eat a balanced diet, avoid stress ( as much as humanly possible ) don’t over style your hair and get regular trims every 6-8 weeks.

How to get long healthy hair

Depending on who you ask, you will get various answers on haircare and what it takes to have healthy hair. Possibly the best advice will come from a qualified hairstylist even though your mother tends to know most things maybe she can sit this one out.

Healthy hair doesn’t happen by chance, it typically is months or years of good hair habbits rather than how expensive your shampoo is. Often the moment you realise you have a problem it’s too late to fix it immediately but don’t panic it’s never to late to get you back on track.

Healthy hair habbits

Regular trims are the most important thing when wanting healthy hair. Because your hair is actually dead keratin removing the ends every 6-8 weeks is needed to ensure the most stressed portion is removed and doesn’t create a split end.

Don’t over style, excessive heat will cause the hair to be dehydrated. Sure you can use serums and leave in conditioners to help protect your hair but too much is too much.

Coloring your hair is fine if it’s done in a conscious way keeping condition in mind. Going over previously coloured hair should be kept to a minimum as this will cause damage.

Your daily routine can be the cause of a lot of damage. Brushing your hair too much aggressively will cause split ends, static and lead to damage.

Now oiling your hair has been told to nourish the hair but in fact just coats the strand, leaving it with a oil film covering the hair, increasing the heat of the strand, sucking out essential moisture. It will add shine but long term leave your hair feeling dry and brittle.

How long is that hair color going to last?

Chances are you saved up for the color of your dreams and spent hours sitting in the salon and you have finally made it! Now how long will it last?

The farther away from your natural color you go the faster you will see the roots growing out. Often the following day from going platinum blonde you will see your dark roots already visible 24 hours later. With white hair ( grey ) that you are coloring you will see them the same way in 24 hours. Hair is continuously growing so the roots will appear no matter what you do.

The closer to your natural color you keep it in depth and tone the less Maintainence you will have.

Balayagè is done from halfway down and is subtle so no Maintainence is needed!

Always discuss your ideal hair color with your hairstylist so there is no surprises.

3 Hair habits to stop

If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you already got.

Sometimes to get the things we want we have to break a cycle of doing things that in some cases, cause the opposite. No one wants to hear that the things they do are wrong but sometimes we need to be told. If you are constantly eating junk food, no exercise and sleep erratically the chances of you being the most healthy are fairly slim. Good habits create results if continued long enough.

Now let’s talk hair! When you shampoo your hair, the mission should be to cleanse your scalp so it’s not about rubbing the hair too much rather it’s about massaging the roots and then working it through the ends. You rinse well to make sure all the shampoo is removed. Then you Squeeze out excess moisture!

Then you apply conditioner on ends and work it through to the mid lengths not the roots or scalp. Conditioner is for your hair! Using a wide tooth comb starting from the bottom comb through to the roots to remove any tangles. Rinse well and not aggressive then don’t touch your hair.

Looks good for a photo but is terrible for your hair!

A lot get out of the shower flip hair upside down and wrap a towel! DO NOT DO THIS! It creates unwanted tension and friction on the hair. Imagine you want to avoid frizz yet you place your hair upside down twisted into a towel expecting it to sit frizz free when it’s out and down? Never goi g to happen!

Once out of the shower, gentle pat dry your hair in the position it’s in, add some leave in conditioner or serum as required and only using fingers place it where you want it. If you use a styling product go ahead and gently put that in but avoid touching it much at all.

These few habits will help you manage your hair in between trips to the salon as well as daily.

What is a Gluten Free haircut

What you put in, you get back and it’s not just food and your body we are talking about. There is no end to this principle the more you put into things the more you get back. Garbage in garbage out it’s really that simple, you can not surround yourself with idiots and expect to be exceptional just like you can’t eat fast food and expect to be 100% healthy!

Gluten free haircuts are haircuts that work, they don’t require blowdry daily, they are architecturally put together for ease of styling and require little or no fuss! They come with full instructions and little maintenance!

Pro tips

Always condition regardless of your hair or scalp being oily or not, it’s about closing the cuticle you make sure moisture doesn’t evaporate.

Use a heat protection serum, helps lock in moisture and keep the cuticle closed.

Leave in conditioner depending on your hair type as to what brand but start with something light and work your way towards heavier if needed.

Regular trims remove split ends hence making sure they don’t travel upwards.

Don’t over style your hair, yes we know it’s cold but if your not going out it may be a good idea to just let it dry naturally in front of the heater.

This is a good start, remember not to overdo color it can be an easy trap thinking it’s freaking it up when in fact it may not need color rather just a health check. Best to come see us and discuss what can be done to help you look your best during winter!

How to fix split ends to make my hair grow faster

A split end or the technical name is “trichoptilosis” ( fyi no one uses that we are just dropping it in to show we know it 🤭) is caused by dehydration, where the hair frays splits into two or more and will eventually split off and remove hair length.

The causes are broad but to give you an idea what type of things create your hair to split here are some!

  • Excessive color processing, you may think you want a color but your hair just can’t take it. Overlapping color will cause irreparable damage.
  • Not getting regular trims, yes every 6-8 weeks
  • Excessive heat damage, we say it a lot but even a hairdryer used incorrectly can dry your hair out and cause split ends. Curling irons, straightening irons etc
  • Excessive sun and wind
  • Inappropriate combing your hair, only comb or detangle with conditioner in it. Pulling out knots roughly will put undue stress on the hair
  • Not conditioning
  • Not using heat protection

There are a lot more causes but these are the main ones which can prevent majority of split ends.

How can you make your hair grow faster, you can’t but you can stop or reduce the ends breaking off and the length to get shorter but looking after it doing the following.

  • Always using conditioner
  • Combing only when the conditioner is in your hair with a wide tooth comb
  • Not rubbing or tossing your hair around like a blanket
  • Not over doing it with heat tools like curling irons flat irons etc.
  • use a heat protection serum
  • Regular trims 6-8 weeks if no color, if color then every 4-6 weeks

The only real way to remove a split end is to cut it off, there is nothing that fixes it, it has to be removed!

Good luck and remember if you treat it gently and don’t abuse it, your hair should be doing exactly what you want it to do, if it’s not then drop in and see us.

Healthy hair, the easy way

For some people think you can literally just pay extra to fix hair that’s ruined, abuse it for months/years then simply pay a little extra or get the new treatment and you have brand new healthy hair but guess what…. you can’t!

Here are a few things you need to do to make sure your hair doesn’t need shaving off and starting again! Some you will think you can skip because, well that’s human nature and you think you can do what you want but if you want healthy hair here goes!

  • Trim every 5-6 weeks! Yes you do and no even if you are trying to grow it then ends need to be removed.
  • Don’t over dry it or end up burning it with heat tools, a blow out shouldn’t destroy your hair if done correctly but sadly a lot of the time it does!
  • Always use conditioner, closes the cuticle making sure the moisture stays in.
  • Use a heat protector or serum everyday!
  • Wash it every day or every second day.
  • Don’t use oil, yes DON’T -it coats the hair, the heat that’s generated from the coating dehydrates the hair and makes it dry and brittle.

No amount of onion juice, curd, beer or oil rubbed onto your scalp is going to do anything other than create bacteria. Anyone who spends time in a salon getting a blow out may or may not know the smoke coming off the client next door is either her hair burning or bacteria & build up burning off the hairshaft! Just because your mum told you and her mum told her and her mums mum told her doesn’t make it correct. There is no quick fix, tablets and vitamins may ( not always ) help supplement vitamins and minerals the body is lacking but take months or even years to see any effect if any!

Now stop doing your home remedies and avoiding getting cut and start looking after your hair!

Drop in and see us if your hair has issues or your experiencing a problem!

Drink 2 litres of this hair growth juice daily for thick healthy hair

It’s no secret that our bodies need water but for some of us we still need reminding. No coffee doesn’t count it’s water, plain water you need to drink.

We look for a diet that suits our need, one that includes our favourite foods, one that doesn’t really restrict us at all or change much of what we are already doing because at the end of the day we are lazy creatures.

So before you start googling diet for healthy hair and keep searching for something that looks like what you already eat, know that you need to capture all 5 food groups to be a healthy human. Once your body is getting what it needs, then everything will function the way it’s meant too!

When you hair isn’t what it used to be

Remember back when you were 23 life was gold, you could stay out till 4am drink like a fish, eat whatever you want and still be on top of your game at 10am?

Well your now a little older and that type of life, even the thought of it makes you feel sick just thinking about it. Guess what, as you get older things change, yep sure you always bagged people who used to have a bad back or struggled after s big night but that’s you now!

Your hair at 19 is never ever ever going to be the same when you are 25-30-35 or 50 and no matter how many times you tell yourself, or us it’s not going to change it! It’s life and your body changes, can you turn the clock back….. in short no. Yes there are products and diet that may help marginally to ensure the best possible hair but it’s not going to be the same ever again!

Moral of the story?

Enjoy what you have, when you have it, embrace change and make the most of what’s in front of you. No matter what, tomorrow won’t be the same as it is today, it’s change and you need to be happy your alive.

Secret to get healthy shinny hair

You have seen the amazing photos online, they advertise it, your so keen to get your dry dull hair looking healthy so how do you do it?

The reality you will think is so basic you will assume we are lying but it’s fact so here goes

  • Get regular trims, regardless of length or desired length your hair needs trimming every 6-8 weeks.
  • Do not overdo chemical treatments, yes keratin is a chemical.
  • Avoid heat tools as much as possible, once a week is ok.
  • Use a good quality shampoo and conditioner every day or every second day.
  • Use a heat protecting serum and/or a leave in conditioner every time you wash your hair.
  • Don’t overlap color, if you have regrowth then color just that, the idea to run the color through the ends is wrong, it only causes damage and your ends should be slightly lighter than the roots anyway to look natural.

Now if you do this we promise you your hair will start looking shinny and healthy in no time!
