We all know someone who says they never blow dry their hair and yet it always looks awesome how? Is it a skill that is taught to few and a mystery to the masses or is it so obvious that no one tries it?
Could it be that a few small tricks and doing less is actually the answer? Keep reading!
Now let’s get one thing straight, you can’t get a haircut once every 6 months and expect your hair to sit the way you want it’s unrealistic it needs to be trimmed every 6/8 weeks to remove dehydrated ends and to prevent split ends. So the foundation is regular trims!
Secondly it’s product, you can use different things for different hair and the needs change depending on the hair. Let’s just put a few products in the basket for you and you can try what you have and see what works and what doesn’t.
A serum, this closes the cuticle and prevents frizz ( don’t use anything too heavy and must be water soluble)
A leave in conditioner which adds moisture, 5-6 sprays throughout.
A sea salt spray, adds strength to the curl and helps it retain its shape.
Now the hard part! After gently applying all these products and ensuring you are not tossing it around, you need to do NOTHING but wait!
Everytime you touch, flip or move it you are encouraging frizz so just don’t touch it, sitting in non direct sunlight and not with direct air facing you ( not in the car with the aircon on full facing you either!) Just wait!
Your curl will be defined and more crisp. Now you know the basics it’s up to you how you adapt it, every head of hair is different and may need more or less of the above. Remember the more you touch it the more frizz will appear!

Some moisture creams work best on wet hair while the same product may work better on your dry hair, depends on your hair, the
The cut, which is the most important element of getting the curl to behave move and perform the way you want is all about our “dry cutting” technique. I call it ” rough enough is good enough” hairstyling. We rarely post country specific content but after seeing the Standard of “beach waves” to a simple Top Knot recently we feel the need to show you the difference, doing hair for editorials or shoots are a privelige that is typically earnt and not just a job, they tend to be chosen through budget constraints or even more sadly based on friendship. Stylists don’t see the difference between sleek and messy further than the looks that were relevant in the 90’s and think hair is like choosing the lunch menu and barely care how it will look since they hope the overall styling will out shine the crappy hair. No, this is not a attack rather a frustration that the Only way the overall imagery will grow and develop is if the right people are either chosen or at least trained.
Producing beautiful images is a team effort and hairstylists are an important part of the process that can now not be overlooked, can turn your $5,000 shoot from backpage to cover easily.

As an Industry let us try to set ourselves apart and become better! If you are a brand then you need to address the hair you want in your editorial rather than only adding it to your conversation on the day of the shoot.
If your a stylist, know the difference and know who is capable of doing it and who isn’t, the overall image is your work so make sure you stand out!
If your a photographer, well hopefully you already agree and have the right people to work with.
A salon visit for some can create high anxiety especially if you haven’t been there before or if you have had a not so pleasant experience sitting in a chair. Obviously we need to point out here that prior research on experience is your best bet, however if you have curly hair then you will be more anxious for sure as it needs a little more TLC to make sure the curl sits right.
Not everyone has a good understanding of hair movement when it has curl ( in fact a lot of salons pride themselves still in making it straight ) so you need to find the right person and have an in depth discussion on your expectations and find out if your living in a fairytale or if it’s in fact a possibility.
3 Red Flags that should send you running out of salon
They tell you to do keratin or rebonding If this is the first option then run. We should be looking for options that embrace your natural movement and curl not just by changing the texture using chemicals.
They want to cut it wet! Hairwet anddry has a completely different texture and finish, it behaves differently so therefore needs to be cut in its natural state ( dry )
They want to use hairspray Curly hair especially should not have products which have alcohol in them you should be using creme’s, serum’s and moisturiser. It’s about boosting up the moisture levels.
Remember curly hair revolves around the moisture levels in it, the more moisture in the air the better the curl, hence most people with curly hair love living close to the ocean.
So when your doing your research for your hair make sure to sit and discuss your hair with your potential stylist prior to getting them to cut it.
