Oil massages, the facts!

Your mum told you to do it so it must be right, right?

Now before you all decide to spam our inbox keep reading.

Oil & water don’t mix right? No they don’t and hair is dead keratin right? Yes!

Oil doesn’t absorb into the skin does it? No!

You can’t replace the moisture inside your dead keratin you can only protect it!

Oil coats the hair even after washing it multiple times, later upon layer of build up of that oil and it accelerates the heat created by sun, air, wind, Ac etc. the heat seals the oil on your hair and the heat is increased sucking the last bit of moisture out of your dead keratin hair!

Later upon later of oil ( because your mumma said it’s good) now your hair feels like a Brillo pad and tougher than concrete but super shinny ( from the oil coating )

Your mum is wrong!

If you think that oiling you’re hair is right and makes your hair grow, stand in a bucket of water and absorb the water next time your thirsty!

You don’t know what you don’t know

We hear stories all the time about just about anything, people add bits to stories and as they move along it becomes fact, when in reality it’s just a story. When it comes to hair there are so many stories that are simply not true nor have any factual context at all. Here are some!

Fact or fiction on hair

  1. If you color your hair, it will fall out? False in fact there is more chance of being hit by a plane landing on your house than your hair falling out from colouring. It can break off if it’s not done properly but falling out is unlikely
  2. Cutting your hair makes it grow faster? No false, your hair grows regardless it may be healthy if you get regular trims ( every 6-8 weeks ) but growth happens under the scalp so nothing to do with the ends. Split ends left can travel up the hair shaft and break off but the growth remains the same.
  3. The more you colour your hair the more grey comes? False, if you cover it over time you will have more grey it’s simply hidden.
  4. Washing your hair causes hairfall? False! Hair has a life cycle and once it’s complete it falls out and grows again. If you keep in mind approx 100 hairs a day fall regardless and you wash it every 3rd day then expect 200-300 hairs come out of your hairstyle when you wash it. When you apply conditioner it closes the cuticle and makes it more slippery against the other hair, so the hair that’s fallen out but stuck will come loose then also. It’s not the product!
  5. Shaving a child’s head to grow it thicker? False cutting hair has absolutely nothing to do with the texture of the growth ( which is Dna and created under the skin ) whilst it may look or feel thicker it is simply because all the hair is then the same length. It does not make it grow any thicker, faster or change the way it will be at all!

Hope that’s has helped clear up some hair myths for you ✌🏻

Power food for your hair

The reality is by this time in the day you are hungry and this looks nothing short of delicious 😋

There has and always will be some trend foods that claims to make your hair grow faster, thicker and healthier and this one is nothing short of a miracle!

The reality is very different and whilst you have another tab open on hacks to increase your Instagram following, just like that tab too it’s all kind of crap!

Your intake is part of what determines hair growth but it’s also genetic, so I guess a cream, lotion or magic berry from the amazon isn’t going to do that much.

There are 5 basic food groups ( google it ) eat from all the required groups daily and you will set your body up for success. Could be training for a marathon or simply wanting to be healthy, it’s the fuel your body needs to function at its best.

Supplements are ok to some extent but understand if something like “folate” helps hair grow, eating folate rich foods and then taking folate tablets isn’t going to double up your growth. Basic common sense, add some of that to your diet and eat healthy, not for a week and expect results it’s more like a lifestyle than a fad.

No food can stop hair fall, it’s like trying to stop your nails growing, you can’t.

How to fix split ends to make my hair grow faster

A split end or the technical name is “trichoptilosis” ( fyi no one uses that we are just dropping it in to show we know it 🤭) is caused by dehydration, where the hair frays splits into two or more and will eventually split off and remove hair length.

The causes are broad but to give you an idea what type of things create your hair to split here are some!

  • Excessive color processing, you may think you want a color but your hair just can’t take it. Overlapping color will cause irreparable damage.
  • Not getting regular trims, yes every 6-8 weeks
  • Excessive heat damage, we say it a lot but even a hairdryer used incorrectly can dry your hair out and cause split ends. Curling irons, straightening irons etc
  • Excessive sun and wind
  • Inappropriate combing your hair, only comb or detangle with conditioner in it. Pulling out knots roughly will put undue stress on the hair
  • Not conditioning
  • Not using heat protection

There are a lot more causes but these are the main ones which can prevent majority of split ends.

How can you make your hair grow faster, you can’t but you can stop or reduce the ends breaking off and the length to get shorter but looking after it doing the following.

  • Always using conditioner
  • Combing only when the conditioner is in your hair with a wide tooth comb
  • Not rubbing or tossing your hair around like a blanket
  • Not over doing it with heat tools like curling irons flat irons etc.
  • use a heat protection serum
  • Regular trims 6-8 weeks if no color, if color then every 4-6 weeks

The only real way to remove a split end is to cut it off, there is nothing that fixes it, it has to be removed!

Good luck and remember if you treat it gently and don’t abuse it, your hair should be doing exactly what you want it to do, if it’s not then drop in and see us.

How to get the pussy wet

It’s beyond comprehension that some of you think most of our posts have a double meaning, seriously we are not that clever all we are trying to do is help you have better hair.

So we get asked a lot on how often should you shampoo your “hair” and it’s a very basic question with some remembering what their mother or grandmother has told you with little or no base to it other than handed down reality.

You can wash your hair everyday it is perfectly fine to do so, in fact it’s probably a good idea especially in a hot climate like India where the pollution levels are fairly high.

A few things to remember tho

  • When you shampoo, always use a conditioner, shampoo opens the cuticle cleanses and conditioner closes the cuticle.
  • Using a SLS free shampoo is more gentle on hair and scalp so it won’t strip your color out or dehydrate your scalp.
  • If you have an oily scalp you still condition the hair, a co dictionary us not for your scalp.
  • Double washing is also ok if it needs it. Don’t apply shampoo to hair that is too wet, remove excess water then apply working from scalp to ends.

Any dirt, pollution or junk that is left on your scalp can and most likely will create a perfect breeding ground for bacteria which can lead to dry scalp, itchy scalp & hair loss.

What size is yours?

We all from time to time wonder if we are normal, from the size of your hotdog to the rate your hair grows we want to be extra. It’s a sign of the times, we want our life to be extra, our Instagram posts to be over the top, our wardrobe to be envious and our holidays to die for!

Well guess what, your hair grows on average 1.25cm per month or slightly under 1/2cm per week. Now give or take a few millimetres that’s it for every human on the planet. If it’s short you will notice it grow faster because you have a point of reference eg; ( hits your ears or shirt collar).

Now some even believe the more you cut it the faster it grows, not true in fact the thought behind that is that if you don’t cut it, split ends occur and hair splits off and length ultimately reduces so it doesn’t grow faster because of cutting it simply doesn’t snap off and reduce.

You should trim your hair so it’s healthy every 6-8 weeks regardless of the length to keep it healthy.

Why your weekly hair spa is not going to fix anything

So you’ve destroyed your hair by doing every chemical treatment on the planet because, well because you were told it was needed now they tell you “Mam you need a weekly hair spa” then have the nerve to tell you if you buy 5 you get one free. Like oh we ruined it but to fix it we can save you some money 😫

Problem is if your hair is that fried no amount of treatments will bring it back to life. Prevention is the best treatment yet very few value the word NO when it comes to getting what you want. Now sure there are products that can artificially rebuild the structure of your hair to some extent and will most definately help but a hair spa? Nope it’s basically conditioner in a jar labelled “hair spa” which is a superficial product and won’t do anything much after you have walked out of the salon.

Some salons put you under a steamer, telling you it opens the cuticle and helps penetrate. What it does is swell the hair by heating it up causing the cuticle to feel smooth until the swelling goes down. Yep you think wow it feels better but in fact the next day after you wash it, it’s exactly the same.

Healthy hair is hair that has been looked after by proper applications of color, regular trims and good hair care regime. Just because a salon offers a treatment or service doesn’t mean you should do it.

Prevention is better than cure any day, no down time! We may say no to you to do certain things but it is for your own good!

What happens when you wrap your hair up

There is convenient then there is hatful sadly these two are the same thing so unless you want to improve your hair quality stop teasing g this now!

When you hit snooze you had no idea that it would cause your hair to break off or be pulled out, I guess it was more about sleeping for another 3-5 min cos your tired AF

When your hair goes from wet to dry it shrinks, so when you put your hair up and wrap a towel around you are stretching the hair tightly. Your hair dries slowly which make it get tighter, the hair pulls tighter and will snap at the weakest point. On top of all of this it’s been wrapped upside down in the complete opposite direction to how it will sit. No it won’t make it full it’s only putting undue pressure on the hair strands which will cause it to go frizzy, break and be dehydrated.

After the shower, pat dry with a towel and don’t shake it or put it up.

Super fruits to make your hair grow!

Recent results of a study revealed that having fruit daily along with a balanced diet will ensure your body functions the way it was designed and hair growth is within its normal range!

Can certain food increase hair growth? Easy answer is no

Vitamin and supplements do they help? If your not eating healthy they can buy obviously eating healthy is going to be far better than eating crap and taking supplements

Does sleep really effect hair? Yep your body needs 8-10 hours shut eye!
A balanced diet covering all 5 food groups daily with 8-10 hours sleep. Hair growth is slightly faster in summer than winter so follow the sunshine around the world and avoid winter is a sure way to get your hair longer faster!

How to grow healthy hair

Do I need to take supplements?

So we get asked a lot about how to grow healthier hair and even though we know the science on how too, we thought it a good idea to share some basics on our bodies and how hair is grown ( and it’s not like growing basil 🌿 or tomatoes 🍅)

What you need to have healthy hair

  • A balanced diet, yes your body requires a combination of all food groups to function to the. Best it can be.
  • The idea of eating crap, not sleeping properly, not drinking enough water and thinking you can use certain products to fix what’s happening internally doesn’t work.
  • Regular trims, yes every 6/8 weeks regardless of what length you have.
  • Good products, that are for your hair right now, not the same products you have been using since 1987 because you mum bought them.
  • Sulfate & parabin free shampoo as it contains less chemicals which strip the scalp and can dry it out.
  • Don’t over process your hair just because it’s on sale, you can’t stock up on your hair color. Only do things that are needed, don’t over do it.
  • Hair spa and oil massages are not going to fix much if not anything at all. If that’s your go too then you need to come see us to explain what oil does on your scalp and hair

Hair growth can not be altered, hair growth and the speed comes from within and is almost the same for everyone on planet earth.

DIY hair care exposed

In most civilized parts of the world hairdressing in a trade that requires schooling, typically anything from 1-3 years depending on if it’s hands on or a college based curriculum. Now given the hours, weeks, months of study let alone hours and hours of practical which includes science of hair, body and nutrition it’s hard to believe someone can just walk to the fridge pull out some left overs and poof, your hair is left feeling like new!

Sure we all see DIY posts on YouTube or Facebook from some very eager kids thinking they have discovered the atom bomb or debuged a myth that the human make up of hair and science was wrong, or that they saw papaya on the list of ingredients so they will mash one up and use it as a hair mask.

Wake up please!

Hair is dead keratin, it’s dead! Yes you can maintain the health or more like condition of the dead keratin by using certain products, use them a certain way etc but putting food scraps on your head is not going to perform miracles.

Myths around putting oil on your hair still get thrown around with people explaining why they think it works but wondering why there hair feels like straw.

A solid hair care regime that includes regular shampooing ( every second day with the right products ) and conditioning every time. A leave in conditioner or serum ( depending on quality & texture of hair ) along with trim’s every 6-8 weeks then there is no reason to panic or have bad hair. We see a lot of people getting things done they either don’t need or shouldn’t be doing when in some situations not doing it would be better for your hair e.g.; your getting your regrowth color done and instead of just doing the roots you get it taken right thru the ends when it didn’t really need to be done ( over processing already coloured hair )

Before you stumble across a pretty little DIY video on you tube and think your life has changed and flit off to the market to get some eggs, fruit and oil for your miracle hair mask think please visit a good salon and ask what can be done to get shinny hair or softer more conditioned hair.  Chances are there are several things you can do that will work instantly.

I can see your underwear, move along

We are not talking about VPL ( Visable Panty Line ) rather talking about being transparent in the way you behave, too often the motives take over and it becomes a game of skill to get what you want, using people as the pawns rather than the required skill to actually do a good job! When you think about being transparent with hair, we could turn this into a short film but rather lets just point out why some times we say no to doing certain things and the reason we do this is because its about being the best for you and your hair.

When it comes to your hair, we only have one motivation and that is to create beautiful hair that works both for that split moment in time when you leave the salon but more importantly for the time after you leave the salon! There are some things we wont do like rebonding or straightening as it is too damaging on the hair, there are times when you may want to do a chemical service but we do not believe your hair health will be maintained so we will say no. We do this because we look after your hair’s best interest.

Isn’t it more important to do things right once rather than having something done that requires the next 4-6 months fixing it or repairing it?

Drop into one of our salons for a honest chat about your hair

Treat your hair like you do your skin!

So before you read whatever you want into this let’s set aside some not so ground breaking facts. Doesn’t matter if your growing it or simply want good growth you need to have to plan for success in whatever you do.

The basics of skin care is cleanse, tone & moisturise

Obviously or maybe not so obviously, when your cleanse your hair you must condition ( which will close the cuticle ) or the internal moisture of the hair shaft will be liable to decrease causing breakage, split ends and color fading. Yes we heard the stories too that conditioner makes your hair fall out, but we had a little chuckle because it’s a myth!

Conditioner closes the cuticle and makes the outer surface of the hair smooth, reflecting light, protecting the structural integrity of the hair or in basic terms keeping it healthy.

Steps to a healthy hair care regime

Shampoo

Choose a shampoo that looks after your problems, if it’s coloured the choose a shampoo to look after the color etc. Yes Sulfate free shampoo is always our preference as it is less harmful on the quality of the hair. We use and recommend Alfa Parf & Label M products.

Conditioner

You choose a conditioner based on the texture of your hair, regardless of the thickness all hair once it has been shampooed needs conditioning. If the conditioner your using makes it too limp your either using something too strong or possibly applying it on the wrong area, it’s for hair not scalp.

Mask or a leave in conditioner

Now depending on the quality of your hair, you may need a mask which is typically more intense than a regular conditioner and again depending on condition but would be done once a week or fortnight at home.

A leave in conditioner or a protein spray is or hair that is fine and limp, it replaces a typical conditioner and is used every time you shampoo.

Serum, this is a leave in product and used when the cuticle is stubborn AF or your hair is always on the dry side. This is done in conjunction with everything else it doesn’t replace.

So now you know what it takes to daily look after your hair, the more time you invest in getting the right products the less time and money you will need to spend in the salon. Make sure you trim regularly ( every 6-8 week ) regardlessly.

THINGS YOU COULD BE DOING WRONG WHILE BRUSHING YOUR HAIR!

78398b0e7ddd72afc71eb3e0bb4cbfbb

How many of us have been brushing their hair 100 times a day?

If yes, polite applause to your dedication, and sorry as no one can bring back the time you have wasted doing that. I know, we all love the idea of sitting in front a mirror and brushing our gorgeous hair like the Victorian times  (P.S. if you’re living with you’re bae, this habit would annoy the heck out of him Lol).  But the present generation hardly has time to eat their lunch, let alone brushing your hair like a ghost of the past. Plus, we are too smart in getting our facts right to fall for such habits. This age old myth isn’t just useless, but it could also harm your hair, brushing harshly and frequently is bad for your hair as it pulls hairs out of their follicles and it can possibly weaken individual strands.

Method: (This will seriously help) We all are use to brushing our hair from roots to our tips in autopilot, did you know this can cause excessive stress on the hair leading to breakage and hair fall? The Right way to do it is to begin brushing from the ends, and slowly working your way up the shaft in sections. You can also use your fingers to gently de-tangle knots. Worst case scenario, if you have practically lived your hair in a bun for days, you might need a lot more time in doing that my friend.

NEVER EVER brush your hair when it’s wet, unless you want to go bald. Wet is far more elastic than dry hair, due to which it is more fragile and can easily snap. If you have been getting heart attacks looking at your hair fall, this might be one of the reasons. De-tangle it before you wash.

Don’t use paddle brush to de-tangle you hair, always use a wide-tooth comb and a de-tangling product to reduce hair fall. And yes, price matters in case of your brush, as cheap brushes have low-quality plastic bristles that can rip damaged hair at its weak points. Stop saving at the cost of your hair, instead, cut down on your junk food and get yourself a good brush.

Lastly, just as important it is to clean your hair, it is also very important to clean your brushes regularly, at least once a week.  With time the bristles get clogged with stray hair and dirt. When you use your unwashed brush on freshly cleansed hair, you are actually depositing product residue onto your strands. Yes, for those who do it once a year, HEAR THIS OUT LOUD.

Follow these simple brushing tips. Trust me; your hair will thank me later.

You are what you eat

I grew up with the understanding of quality in quality out when it comes to food and from a young age we were all taught about the five food groups. Yet some people still think that they can skip a few and it hardly matters, but want the best of everything and it just doesn’t work that way. I have even heard nutritionists recommending to ignore it ( please avoid myths & shortcuts unless your in the army )

When it comes to hair, skin & nails  it is the quickest way to see your true health. We all need certain natural vitamins and minerals in our diet to function and grow the way we were designed. Certain amount of sleep, water, protein, carbohydrates etc etc you can not eat shit, have a terrible sleeping pattern and go to the gym and expect it to all balance out because it won’t.
8 hours of sleep, 2 litres of water and your daily quota of each food group then you will be on the right track for healthy hair. Obviously no matter how good you are at following the above you need a trim every 6-8 weeks and using good products. Trust me the people who follow this even if it’s only at 90% have a better quality of life, there attitude is better as well as there hair.

No matter how hot you think you are, no one lives forever and eventually it will bite you in the butt.
