The naked truth about healthy hair!

For some people think you can literally just pay extra to fix hair that’s ruined, abuse it for months/years then simply pay a little extra or get the new cool treatment and you have brand new healthy hair but guess what…. you can’t! Your hair doesn’t care where you live, your social status or how much money you spend on it. If you don’t do the right things it will not be healthy!

Here are a few things you need to do to make sure your hair doesn’t need shaving off and starting again! Some you will think you can skip because, well that’s human nature and you think you can do what you want but if you want healthy hair here goes!

  • Trim every 5-6 weeks! Yes you do and no even if you are trying to grow it then ends need to be removed. Hair typically grows 1-1.5 inches per month so cut less than that and the length keeps getting longer!
  • Don’t over dry it or end up burning it with heat tools, a blow out shouldn’t destroy your hair if done correctly but sadly a lot of the time it does!
  • Hair is dead keratin, the growing or alive part of your hair is under the scalp!
  • Always use conditioner, closes the cuticle making sure the moisture stays in.
  • Use a heat protector or serum everyday!
  • Wash it every day or every second day, this keeps the scalp healthy and the PH level of your scalp healthy which in turn creates a healthy place for hair to grow!
  • Don’t use oil, yes DON’T -it coats the hair, clogs the scalp folicale and the heat that’s generated from the coating dehydrates the hair and makes it dry and brittle. It may look shiny but your hair will feel rough!

No amount of onion juice, curd, beer or oil rubbed onto your scalp is going to do anything other than create bacteria. Anyone who spends time in a salon getting a blow out may or may not know the smoke coming off the client next door is either her hair burning or bacteria & build up burning off the hairshaft! Just because your mum told you and her mum told her and her mums mum told her doesn’t make it correct. There is no quick fix, tablets and vitamins may ( not always ) help supplement vitamins and minerals the body is lacking but take months or even years to see any effect if any!

Now stop doing your home remedies and avoiding getting cut and start looking after your hair!

How to stop hairfall for Men!

Most likely your a guy, you think like a guy, you most likely are not even reading this properly ( your a guy so skipping through it to the photos ). You also most likely don’t think about your hair until you’re either on the way to the hair salon or sitting in the chair about to get your haircut!

The skin fade cut, because you need to be told 4-5 times you need a haircut this will last longer & look fresh!

Skin fade with a little length on the top. Looks cool but be careful as it having hair that’s longer at the front can end up making your forehead look bigger!

Add a beard, do this or at least start doing this towards the end of summer or you could possibly die from the heat! Power to our brothers that survive through summer with a killer beard !

Color it, who said guys can’t have hair that is coloured and fun!

Yes even glow in the dark color!

If you have grey or you don’t have grey hair chances are you look fairly close to your actual age +/- 3-4 years. Colouring your hair black can and possibly does, make you look older!

Learn what’s in and what’s not, research online what salon, what stylist and stalk them.

Get the right information about your hair, find out how to manage it, what products to use & how to use them!

If all else fails, add some tattoos to your look and forget about your hair!

This is a big one, if it’s going bald or you’re loosing your hair too the point every strand on your head you end up trying to cover it up then maybe it’s time to shave it off! You will look younger!

Whatever you end up doing, don’t try to be someone else. Have an honest conversation with your hairstylist and get something that works for you, maintain it and keep changing it up every now and then!

When you are over 40 and look like your over 50

A lot of the time it’s attitude so chill but it is also about changing things up, the older we get the less likely we are to change too much. It becomes more than a habit, it’s almost a belief that we are a certain way. It’s not and you should change things up from time to time to keep yourself interested in you! After all it’s refreshing when you do something new, you feel young!

Now while a little hose off might help, especially for some it may require a complete change of what you have been doing!

Often we can get in a rut, this is the way you have been doing things forever and that’s the way it is kind of attitude. Well sooner or later you need to let routine go and change, evolve. It doesn’t have to be scary or drastic, it can be slight changes over time to eventually give you a new look!

If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you already have!

How to get more shine in your hair!

We know at some stage of your hair life, you have longed to have that eternal shine in your hair that people comment on and long for!

You most likely have been exposed to so many products that claim to be able to do it for you and it’s still not happening, here are a few things you need to do to not only have shiny hair but healthy!

  • Use a sulfate & paraben free shampoo ( we use and recommend Alfa Parf Milano ) shampoo once a day if you live in a hot polluted area and always condition.
  • Use a leave in water soluble serum, we use and recommend Alfa Parf Milano Cristali Liquid. Few drops when out of the shower and few on mid lengths and ends after it’s dry.
  • Only comb your hair in the shower with the conditioner in, the conditioner acts as a lubricant and won’t aggravate that that hair.
  • Trim your hair every 6 weeks, yes you must remove the ends regardless of desired length.
  • Don’t over color it! Easy to say but we find ourselves saying no to a lot of people that think they need color when in fact they don’t.
  • You can use heat tools but not daily. Use 2-3 times a week but not more than that.
  • When blow drying, use the cool setting to sooth the cuticle, this reduces swelling and seals it immediately, adding more surface area to shine!

There are several other things that can help and in this image we used a clear gloss to seal the color in and adds shine, it’s totally beautiful shiny hair that if looked after at home will not need much Maintainence.

If you need help with your hair, or have a question about how to get healthy hair then drop in or give us a call!

Save 5000rp on your next clothes purchase!

We go through times when not much is going to make you feel good other than a shopping spree of buying several bags of utterly useless stuff except that jacket which was to die for ( even tho it’s now summer and by the time you can wear it, it will be 1 year old )

Why bother filling up your wardrobe to make you feel good for a few hours a day when new hair lasts for weeks!

It makes total sense that a visit to the salon to change your look is s better investment than buying new clothes, when considering you already have clothes you haven’t worn yet!

Let’s collaborate

This word creates such a deep sense of suspicion for a lot of people and brands and yet in its true form creates a win win for everyone so why is it that it seems like everyone wants to “collaborate”?

Organic Collaboration

For some brands collaborating with certain people there is a clear goal to showcase their product or service to a certain demographic which the talent has a certain catchment in the following. Now if the goal is to simply expose that brand to the audience then the way to do it can be done in so many ways but in the tone of the talent. Imagine your a serious brand that has a very cool product but you advertise in a very traditional tone, given you want to expand your audience it’s the safest way to let go of the reins and let it be spoken about in a positive manner by the selected collaborator, after all you are wanting to touch a completely different demographic.

Who is the right catchment

With Instagram blowing up in the last few years some people slide DM’s to possibly hundreds of brands looking for a free meal, trip, clothes or even hair ( yes we get them too ). It’s not looked down at it just has to make sense to our target market. If our price point is above average and we are 100% not a traditional scripted advertiser but you are advertising mass products, well scripted generic text chances are no matter how many you have managed to amass very few will be converted to us as potential business, we all follow brands and people we typically like and can relate too. If you can’t relate it’s not for you.

A copy paste with your set hashtags is as transparent as a pain of glass, it’s an ad and doesn’t feel as authentic so it has to be not carefully curated or scripted or it isn’t real!

With some of the most successful high profile people in the country as clients, we speak from a zone of knowing what makes them tick not from the sidelines of thinking we know what they like.

The Olympics of collaborations

We have all seen those Cochella posts that once you tap it is saturated with brand tags to the point you simple don’t know what to do. It seems like the Music festival collaboration has hit its peak with glitter dust, torn booty shorts and box braids, it’s over saturated!

Now saying all the above with a little sprinkle of salt, collaborating is one of the coolest things if it’s a win win with like minded people or brands and we are always open to discuss it with the right people or brands.

Collaborating doesn’t always mean swapping services with no payment, it can be a multiple of things however typically a tag doesn’t mean you are getting something for free!

So in short, doesn’t matter if it’s not a like minded brand it’s the consumer that you are targeting and if it’s a fit for both then it should be explored. Changing the tone and content to directly connect to a new fresh audience is what makes it beneficial for all.

Happy tagging!

Beauty parlour’s are where beautiful hair goes to die

We get referred to as a “parlour” a lot and majority of the time it’s out of habit more than anything else and let’s be honest the word itself isn’t insulting or hideous it’s the innuendo of it that is. Typically a parlour is a place you go to that your mum went too, your auntie goes too and if you want a quick blow out, you end up going too!

The problem arises from training and skills set, a lot of people still think you learn hair then that’s it, you can be doing it for the rest of your life, others think the occasional brush up of skills, getting a certificate and a selfie with the trainer makes you awesome but it couldn’t be further from reality.

Learning the basics about hair is obviously essential but developing the skills needed on a daily basis takes time as well as evolving those skills to be able to perform daily on an ever changing demand takes an openness to learn and eagerness to be the best.

“When you are green you are growing, when you are ripe you are rotten”

Read it again, that’s right, when you know it all you are finished, done and have nothing left! We all need to grow and develop our skills daily to be better today than we were yesterday and not think you are the best, chances are when your mind is in that head space you most likely have lost it.

Be open to new ideas, be ready to change and be willing to put yourself out there! That’s what being the best is all about, don’t settle!

Disconnected hair

There is a growing trend of having disconnected lengths through the interior to create a shape & style. Gone is the old school undercut and welcome in the evolved versions of the disconnected cuts!

“Sometimes it’s done due to hair texture, sometimes it’s to create shape and ease of styling” says our creative director Rod Anker

First seen during war times out of ease to be done by anyone not just trained professionals disconnected cuts were done out of need and typically worn slicked back with grease.
The undercut has gained a lot of momentum especially in the last 12 months and we feel the need now to help you explore a few more options to help you evolve your hair.

This keeps weight and length on the top whilst removing the exterior and going very short leaving an area that is not connected in length. Styling is simply with a little matte paste to create texture!

Well you work in a let’s just say not so youthful office that spends more time worrying about your clock in time and thinks “cool” haircuts and fashion like a weird language they don’t know. This keeps the length at the front so on the weekends you can change it up and show off your personality.

Much the same as the previous but a little longer at the front, be aware the longer it is the harder for it to stay back ( it’s called gravity 🙂 )

Just because you like it short doesn’t mean it has to be boring! Shaving it super tight on the sides and leaving it slightly longer on purpose adds attitude!

Your head tattoo is too cool to cover cut!

I want to look like a gangster out of GQ magazine undercut

I only want people to notice how cool my cut is from behind haircut!

So guys if you want something fresh and not too out there, we have a way for your hair to be cool without looking like a clown,  get yourself into the Salon and let us work out something that you feel comfortable with thats cool!

What’s your good name?

No matter how many times someone ask’s this question for outsiders it can seem a tad wrong. Like do we have a good name and a bad name? The intention is coming from the right place but just is a little wrong at the same time.

Here are some you can use if you want to have some fun with it

Enjoy your weekend 😂

Do not confuse your google search with my qualifications and years of experience

Don’t know what you were taught as a child but we got drilled into us, do it right the first time. A lot of people still think that a 5 minute video on how to color hair or because you are following multiple hairdressers and watch all the stories on Instagram is going to give you the skills to do hair. Babe it’s not If you are on a budget, we get it and will help you get the look within your budget but when you do it yourself, then have to fix it you can end up spending more time and money doing it.

Maybe your parents vibe was get it cheaper, or do it yourself?

Whatever or whoever you want to blame right now if you look like this it’s kind of irrelevant. The fix now is get it to not look like a colouring in gone wrong by a 4 year old.

The easy guide to get the hair you want!

Getting your hair done exactly the way you want is hard and at times impossible and it seriously shouldn’t be. While some go down the “let me tell the hairdresser what to do step by step” and others say very little and hope for the best.

We believe that there is a middle ground and as Artists that are being asked to create art on your hair we have a detailed consultation prior to doing anything.

Look for a hairstylist that you feel comfortable with, stalk them on google and social media after all that’s what it’s for! Once you have done your research and happy then make a booking and follow the below!

There can be differences in terminology and filters so we go out of our way to synchronise to ensure we are all on the same page before starting. Typically everyone’s version of short, long, medium, blonde and brown is and will always be very different. It’s like a woman with waist length hair that’s black telling a hairstylist with a shaved head that’s bleached platinum white she wants it short and light! You really have to understand the filters which everyone’s is different!

Here are a few things to get you ready for your next Salon Visit

  • Reference photo’s, ideally 2 or 3 but remember a few things here. Don’t randomly save photos that don’t match or have any synergy with each other. If you have a direction be clear in your thoughts. Keep in mind the majority of images on line have or at least could be edited in tone, shade and reflection so try and get few options of the same tone to be sure.
  • Maintainence and upkeep have to be a point of discussion. While you may love a certain look, you may also not be prepared to be locked into 3-4 week visits. Keep in mind cost & time to upkeep, if you are ok with it then it’s fine. Usually a similar effect may be able to be achieved that’s less Maintainence, ask for options.
  • If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you already have.
    • If you want it to look natural, understand it needs variation in tone and hue, both vertically as well as horizontally, no one’s hair is naturally all the same color and tone from roots to ends!
    • When you are getting a haircut, it’s important that you are honest when it comes to styling it, we can cut it in such a way it moves in the direction you want it too and we will show you how to manage it. If you intend not to do anything, then tell your hairstylist so we can help find a style and plan that ticks that box for you.
    • Trust us, if you have done your homework and found us, trust that we know what we are doing. It may take us several visits to get the desired result due to condition and maintaining the integrity of your hair but understand we don’t over promise, we will always be keeping it real to ensure the end result speaks volumes about our work.

Hope that helps and remember, consultations are free!
