Why we do not do Rebonding

Well you have all heard the words poker straight and at times anyone with curly hair especially would love to have straight hair even just for a day, after all grass is greener right?

There was a big move towards making your hair as straight as an arrow which gained momentum in early 2000 and started to slow down a few years later once the novelty wore off and people tried to grow it out or even worst get color at the same time. Now globally, companies who care about hair health like ALFA Parf do not produce such products.

We as a company are only interested in being able to produce quality hair, day in day out in an ethical way. Rebonding is possibly the most aggressive service that you can do to your hair, it breaks down the structure of the hair to the point that it’s completely fragile, resulting in un repairable damage that only a cutting will fix. Sure you have products that will add moisture, make it feel slightly better and some may or may not be able to fix it.

Our view is very simple, why would you do one service that needs another to “fix” it? The movement and texture of your hair, should be respected and worked with by your hairdresser. With effort, skill and know how any head of hair can be tamed in a way that won’t lock you to the salon getting treatment after treatment to fix the condition after your straightening.

Do we do or recommend  Rebonding?

No we don’t it’s too aggressive to the hair.

Is there an alternative?

The alternative is keratin, which adds strength and relaxes the hair leaving it in better condition than before you had it. Make sure it’s fermaldahyde free

Why do some salons push Rebonding still?

Can’t answer that other than its an easy way to sell two services, one is Rebonding, the other is the “hair spa” to fix it.

Why do these companies still make it?

Alfa Parf is one of the only global companies that do not produce it.

Hair has to have some amount of texture and movement in order for it to hold a shape hence we believe in keratin treatments as they allow the hair to still move and be styled as well as maintain the integrity of the hair.

Hair on point, moves!

Hair color myths

When we are born out hair & skin can be a different color, for some it can be dramatic for me my hair was blonde but it’s not now. Over time your hair and skin change color, it’s life. For you to look natural over time your hair needs to be slightly lighter.

There is more to colouring hair than just covering grey, or having one solid color which can look as fake as wearing a wig! Hair naturally will have various shades, multiple tones from roots to ends and different reflects in light that you will never be able to achieve out of a box!

One of the most common issues we see with people colouring their hair at home is using the wrong color as well as a complete blanket coverage that leaves you looking like, well not as natural as you thought.

Some color myths answered

Can you change your diet to stop your hair going grey? No

Will colouring your hair make it grey? No

Will colouring your hair make it fall out? No

Should the ends be slightly lighter than the roots if I want it to look natural? Yes

If your colouring to cover grey then keep in mind that the darker you color it the faster you will notice the white hair.

If your colouring for attitude or a fashion result then the rules are up to you!

Best to do your research, consult a professional.

Quality in quality out

Where can you find inspiration when your only seeing the one point of view?

How can you grow and develop if your only listening to the one voice?

You can’t

I know I’ve spoken about this before but I personally believe you end up morphing into what you see and/or believing it to be the best simply because you don’t have any other reference to calibrate it by.

I’m a little bit of an Instagram addict, not because I care what others are doing but to stay connected to what is happening in the world. There is so much information, inspiration right there in real time it’s bound to keep your battery like mine ( at 5%).

If your not on it or on it but only following your friends or posting selfies then you are missing out!

Check out our salon Salon Instagram & Rod’s Instagram and stay connected.

Foolproof way to remove split ends

There is always someone telling awesome stories about heading to the fridge and mixing all sorts of things that will magically remove or repair your spilt ends when in fact it’s impossible.

Any professional hairdresser will never tell you anything other than scissors will remove them it’s a fact.

Best way to look after your hair is regular visits to the salon even if your growing your hair, trimming the ends every 6-8 weeks along with a suitable shampoo & conditioner. If your hair requires you may need a serum or a leave in conditioner. If your thinking how do I grow it when I’m cutting it all the time then you may need to think about a salon change, your hair goals should be know and planned.

Why it’s important to talk before we do it!

Communication is important in everything we all do, it’s no surprise there but yet sometimes the unspoken look or the actions are exchanged thinking we know what the other is thinking. A lot of time someone will book in for service x and once you meet them the discussion unfolds and in fact the thing they booked in for is the exact opposite to what is needed.

As professional hairdressers, we have to take the time to get that picture or feeling out of the mind of our client and discuss it in a way to get the facts and reality not just do what we are told because a lot of the time it will give you the result you don’t want. Now clearly reading this sounds like hairdressers will be doing whatever they like, well no it’s about a discussion about what you want, what you desire, what hot hair looks like to you, what degree of styling you will do daily, what products you will use, how you will use them  and a lot more.

For us it’s never about selling product it’s about making sure you have the right tools in order to re create the same thing at home day in day out, so we both look better!

With little conversation you will never be able to achieve something you truly love, it becomes hit and miss.

So before you get your next hair cut make sure your consultation is more than just a few words, a sign of a professional hairdresser is the consultation.

What comes out needs to have value!

We believe that hair + art have a complete connection and when it comes to our design it had to be simple yet incredibly functional. We strive to be incredible transparent with less attention to the peripheral things in the industry and concentrate and excel in one thing, hair!

Yes we do manicure and pedicures also but we don’t pretend to be a “one stop shop” we excel at hair and our focus is just that. Are we expensive, well starting at 500 rp we don’t  think so. Are we cheap, well no Rod is the most expensive hairstylist in the country. Are we the best? Well that’s not for us to say but we continue to improve ourselves and certainly are considered the leaders in the country.

If your not loving your hair the way you should it’s about time you tried our salon.

Healthy choices for your hair

With a large shift globally of us all choosing more natural food, less processed and more organic and ethically produced produce it only makes sense at some point we question our hair choices. So many myths, blogs, advice and DIY information out there that almost always contradicts itself.

Here is my tips for things you can stop, start or continue depending on what your currently doing.

1. Shampoo choice – depending on the state of your hair, if you have color, damage, fine, thick etc etc but a sulfate free shampoo or one that is low in sulfate like “organic” by Label M is ideal. Will cleanse gently but not strip color or moisture. Once a week using a deep cleansing shampoo to remove any pollution or impurities is a must also. Keeping in mind when you shampoo you must condition every time ( just your hair ) shampoo daily or very least alternate days.

2. Rebonding is in my opinion one of the most aggressive things you can do to your hair and creates a nightmare long term for both styling as well as Maintainence. Alternative is Keratin ( fermaldehyde free) we use Global Keratin.

3. Regular trims, yes 6-8 weeks and if the thought scares you is probly to do with the scissor happy hairdresser you go to so change. Removing and split ends is essential for healthy looking & behaving hair.

4. The most over used word in Asia is HAIR SPA peeps understand majority are beautifully packaged conditioners. You need protein and moisture and treatment will do that so repairing damage is part of the purpose and a lot simply can’t do that. We use ALFA Parf linseed treatment and Olaplex.

5. Styling, a lot of hairstylist burn, pull when styling your hair and this if done weekly will create damage that only scissors can remove. A blow dry should never really be felt let alone be painful.

If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you already have. Hair you love starts with a few choices by you.

Monsoon hair hacks like a pro!

It’s kind of obvious we should be now taking the umbrella everywhere we go just in case but if you do get caught here are some hacks that will help!

It starts in the shower

The cuticle layer which is the outer layer of your hair is the key to keeping moisture out & in which will prevent the frizz & dehydration. A lot of people still skip using a conditioner after shampooing in the hope to have fuller hair, which will leave your hair dry & prone to frizz and breakage.  Always use a conditioner.

Don’t over touch or agrivate your hair.

The trick is not to touch it unless there is a good reason, you should be only doing the touching in the shower. When the conditioner is in, a wide tooth comb to remove the tangles and rinse.  Do NOT TOUCH IT AFTER THIS!

I’m often suprised when  people shake their hair like a hall carpet after a dust storm and then wonder why it’s frizzy. Don’t flip your hair upside down and wrap it in a towel, this is creating frizz because of the direction your drying it.  Pat dry or blot dry your hair, never shake, toss it or start flipping this way and that.

Wet to dry & cool

If your hair happens to get wet, or you get caught in the rain try and get it dry as soon as possible. Aim to blowdry it as soon as possible, also make sure all of the moisture leaves the hair using the cold button make sure the hair is cooled down, this closes the cuticle hence helping to repel moisture in and out!

Pretty in Silk

No it’s not just for royalty, get yourself a silk Scarf and wrap your hair  in it before going to bed.

Products to help

Cristali Liquid by ALFA Parf, closes cuticle helping repel moisture radicals.

Dry Shampoo by Label M – this will help absorb a little moisture.

A protein spray, a leave in conditioner – various brands and helps lock cuticle closed

If all else fails then stop fighting it and go with it, add some creme or paste and load it up and let your hair go free!

Texture like a boss

Everyone likes to look their best in their most natural state but does little to none effort to listening when someone offers an honest advice/opinion. Its just like going to the doctors and listening to them about how we should sleep well, eat well, exercise and put away that junk, but do we actually follow whats best for us?! The same goes for when a hairdresser suggests what and how our hair would or could be in our best state we listen in one ear and comes out from the other.
We Instagram stalk all the “It girls” whose hair is effortlessly cool and the most common factor in all of them is getting the right cut and texture into it which helps you to be the wash and go kind of gal. There is something awfully sexy about that effortless, laid back vibe but still holding your whole look together.
There has been a strong shift towards empowered women who wants to look beautiful and polished but don’t want to be slaves to their hair and spends hours on blowdrying every morning, lets be honest it looks a little too placed and hoity toity for an everyday look.

We at Rod Anker Salons give more than 100% into consultation and approach every haircut as a conversation and know what your lifestyle is like, what you want from your hair, so we can tailor make every haircut to your need and textured, without them putting in little to no work into it.
